About Hire Local DC
The Hire Local DC Coalition consists of employers and employer organizations working together to ensure that DC residents obtain DC’s “good” jobs.
By “good” jobs, we mean a job on a career pathway to a salary that can support a family in the high-cost Washington, DC area (about $65,000 a year) and offer conditions for stability and growth.
Why is Hire Local DC needed?
Good jobs are plentiful in the Washington area, but DC residents are not securing nearly enough of them.
Many employers and organizations are working hard to fix this problem, but their efforts are not coordinated and they face barriers and challenges along the way.
We believe that by tackling these challenges as a Coalition, we can support more DC residents in securing good jobs to create a more equitable workforce.
What We Do
Modeled after MetroNow, Hire Local DC provides a single place for employers to coordinate their efforts and strengthen the local talent pipeline.
We offer a single point of access for the government to reach the employer and non-profit communities. We help employers share resources, create alignment across their individual initiatives, and work together toward common goals.
Through events, a regular newsletter, our website, and engagement with individual employers, we pursue three primary activities:
Run an ongoing campaign to encourage businesses to hire local DC residents
Help employers hire local DC residents
Enable collaboration among employers, providers, and government to strengthen the local talent pipeline for DC employers
Our Call to Action
Building Local Talent through Work-Based Learning
A Guide for DC Employers
Our latest resource, "A Call to Action: Building Local Talent through Work-Based Learning," is a collaborative effort between CityWorks DC and the Federal City Council's Hire Local DC Coalition. This actionable guide helps employers identify best-fit strategies to build their talent pools while providing invaluable, career-building experience to DC's young people through work-based learning.
What is Work-Based Learning?
Work-based learning includes a variety of engagement types such as career exploration, career preparedness, and career launch opportunities. Career exploration activities like guest speaking, job shadowing, and participating in career fairs help young people learn about different careers, businesses, industries, and roles. Career preparedness provides paid, short work experiences like internships for young people to build employability skills and first-hand knowledge of different professions and companies. Career launch opportunities set young people to be hired into and successful in entry-level, full-time positions in high-wage, high-demand roles through intensive, typically longer-term training and work experience.
Why Work-Based Learning Matters
This guide clarifies the work-based learning options available to businesses, as well as the costs and benefits of each stage. It also highlights that in the DC region, there is a dearth of opportunities in career launch for occupations beyond the skilled trades, even with the growth in tech and knowledge economy jobs. Career launch is one of the most promising talent pipeline strategies, including apprenticeship for near-term impact.
